Famous Indie Bands 5

Independent rock is one of the hardest genres to explain. Bands trying to break into the music scene love to label themselves as indie. Critics love to scrutinize bands to truly sow if they are independent or not, utilizing certain criteria from back in the day. Then you have to consider mainstream success and major record affiliation. Indie bands that have gone this route are usually referred to as sell-outs. But does this make them lose their indie label? Well, I guess it is what you want to believe. In a way to celebrate the indie scene, I am going to speak about a few of the most famous indie bands.

Arctic Monkeys

arctic monkeysThis British indie rock band was established in 2002 in Sheffield, England. Band members included Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders, and Nick O’Malley. There was another band member, Andy Nicholson, who left the group right after their debut album, which received critical acclaim and was the fastest selling album in all of British music history. The album won the 2006 Mercury Prize and 2007 Brit Award for “Best British Album.”  Arctic Monkey made history by being the first band in 2006 to win “Best Band” from the NME and “Best British Band.”

The Strokes

the strokesThis American rock band was started in NYC in 1998 by Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond, Jr., Nikolai Fraiture, and Fabrizio Moretti. To date, The Strokes have released five album, with their first, “Is This It,” receiving rave reviews and earned them six awards, including “Best New Band” and “Best Act.” Their following albums weren’t as successful as their first, but did receive excellent praise. The band took a long hiatus, but came back together to release another album in 2013 called “Comeback Machine.” The Strokes have sold over four million albums.

The Killers

the killersThe Killers is an American indie rock band out of Las Vegas, Nevada, of all places. The reason why I said of all places is because The Killers are known to sing about their religious views and beliefs. If you are familiar with the reputation of Vegas, then you know where I am coming from. On the music scene since 2001, band members are Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer, and Ronnie Vannuci, Jr. The band’s name comes from a logo seen on a made-up band in another band’s (New Order) music video. The Killers have had four albums at the top of the charts: “Hot Fuss,” “Sam’s Town,” “Day & Age,” and “Battle Born.” They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide.  Additionally, they have been nominated for seven Grammys, seven BRIT Awards, and 24 NME Awards

Even though independent bands use to mean groups that signed with independent labels, today indie bands include those who stray away from mainstream music. These groups tend to experience with new sounds, and while they might go mainstream at some point, indie bands tend to remain loyal to the independent label and loyal fans who were with them from the beginning.

Coolness Meets Creativity: Independent Music and Art

I remsolo gutairember back in the day, when the term “indie” was spoken, it was referred to as independent music and art. This type of music and art is typically outside of the mainstream and not financed by corporate financing. Independent doesn’t just mean music and art. It can also be about a self-established business, like for example, The Garage Door Guy (www.thegaragedoorguycorp.com).

Independent coincides with a sense of idealism and anti-corporation. For years, independent music hosts a whole subculture made up of musicians who create music for enjoyment and pleasure, not profit. The thing about independent musicians is that they are not beholden to the same profit-based bottom line or shareholder pressure that a lot of music labels are. If you are an independent musician, you are able to promote your music, even if it doesn’t have any type of commercial appeal.

Reasons to Support Underground Music

If you know someone who is always talking about bands you have never heard of, welcome to the world of underground music. You might not know this, but underground music is a HUGE community. And this is one community you want to be a part of, and not just because of the great music. Underground music also has the best fans.

Just Like Normal Folks

When underground bands are touring, they are known to stay at fan’s homes. To put it simply, underground bands are quite accessible. You won’t find an entourage and 50 bodyguards around band members. In my experience, I have found underground bands like to hand around their fans, eating, drinking, and talking. To tell you how accessible and affordable hearing underground music is, you can see live four or five underground bands with a combination of over 100 years of music experience, for about $20 – $30.  Not to mention, you can get front row seats easily.

How to Start a Band

garage banYou and your friends want to start a band, and you are wondering what you need to do. I know a little something about starting a band from scratch, so to speak. While I enjoyed writing songs and music for my own pleasure, it felt better when I wrote and played with a group of like-minded individuals.

Moreover, playing in a band keeps you motivated. Playing in a band forces you to keep your musical skills on point. You definitely don’t want to be the band member whose sounds are jacked up. Another example, if there is a new song that the band wants to perform, and you have until next practice to learn it, you will be more motivate to do so, as opposed to you just learning it for your own personal reasons.

Birds of a Feather

Once you have picked out a soundproof rehearsal space, it is time to start auditioning band members. It is imperative that you select people who are on the same level musically as you are. If you get a bassist who is more experienced than the rest of the band, he or she isn’t going to stay around for long. Other characteristics of similarity to look for are: musical tastes, age range, and level of dedication. Lastly, make sure you look for band members who can make rehearsals.

To get started in looking for band members, advertise well. Today, there is no better way than the internet and social media. You can create a Facebook page or blog. The most important factor is that you have to make sure the ad you “speak” to who you are as a band and what you are looking for. When musicians are reading your ad, you want them to feel that it is speaking to them.

Nocta: The Making of a Band

If you are wondering where our band’s name, Nocta, comes from, it really is an interesting story. In 2000, I and some friends started a band. At first, all the band consisted of was a bassist and three guitarists. We rocked, if I do say so myself.

What did we name our band? When we first got together, we decided on PrimiNocta. PrimiNocta means “the first night.” I forgot why we decided on this name. In September of 2001, PrimiNocta grew, and we acquired a drummer, which was so very needed and wanted.  Since we are all about simplicity (I mean, who wants complications in their life?), our band, PrimiNocta shortened our name to Nocta.  Right now, our band has two guitarists, a drummer, and a bassist.

First and foremost with Nocta, we want to be original. I know that every band says that, but we really mean it. Like a lot of indie bands, we write our own music and lyrics. Along that same note, we don’t believe in and don’t fit into one genre. With any of our songs, we will start off by playing a nice, soft melody and end with heavy beats. You never know what to expect with us; we never know where the music will take us ourselves.

There are those who have referred to Nocta as a heavy metal band/group, and there is some truth to this, I guess. I know I said that we didn’t have one category to fit into, if I have to admit that we did use plenty of heavy metal beats. If I had to say where we fitted into the music scene, we were what was and still is called underground music. Underground music is typically thought of as music by a band that isn’t considered mainstream. It can also be thought of as a band with music that is controversial.
